Sydney Farkas

de Souza APN

RN, MN, CON(C) - Provincial Educator & Coordinator, Oncology Practice Readiness - Alberta Health Services

Sydney found oncology nursing early in her career and never left! She has over 17 years’ experience in diverse frontline roles and as a clinical nurse educator. She is a certified oncology nurse with the Canadian Nursing Association and holds a BN from the University of Calgary (UofC) and a Master’s of Nursing with a Focus in Teaching from Athabasca University.

She is driven by life-long learning and passionate about quality cancer care and the impact of  standardized and accessible specialty oncology nursing education. A desire to drive quality improvement with data led her to pursue her de Souza APN Designation. Wanting to gather the valuable perspective and experiences of new oncology nurses and CNEs, her evaluation project shed light on the impact of O-PREP on clinical practice, patient safety and retention and provided qualitative and quantitative data to direct future improvements in Alberta.  Sydney is also one of the first de Souza APNs in Alberta.

Sydney is active at local, provincial and national levels of oncology as; an ONIGA—South member since 2009 and former President and Education Coordinator, an Adjunct Clinical Associate and Instructor for the Graduate Oncology Certificate in the Nursing Faculty at the UofC, and a member of the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology (CANO/ACIO)’s Education and Professional Practice committees.
